One Dot Oh
On January 12th, 2006 I released the first public version of a thing called Firebug with this description:
> This is a very early release - the code is only a few days old. Beware of the leopard.
One year and twelve days later I am happy to announce that the [leopard’s][] growl has been quieted to a purr, clearing the path for the final [Firebug 1.0][] to make its way in the world.
If you read this blog, that won’t mean much to you personally since you’re probably already using 1.0 beta. However, there are still tens, maybe even hundreds of thousands of people who are still using 0.4.1 and are going to get a very nice present the next time they restart Firefox.
Thanks to all the people who have supported Firebug during its infancy, especially those who have contributed new ideas and [donations][] to the project. We’re just getting started here! If nothing else, I hope Firebug inspires the makers of other browsers to invest more time in development tools. The web development paradigm wants to evolve, but we can’t build the future with yesterday’s hammer.

Huge congratulations Joe! You will go down in history, together with Google Maps, as the guy who jump-started the Web 2.0.
Firebug is a smashing hit. I’ll make sure I try to convert every web developer that crosses my path - and I truly hope you raise a decent sum through donations.

Firebug changed the way I do front end development.

[…] Joe Hewitt has announced Firebug 1.0 final, after sneaking support for viewing computed styles into beta 9. Since I started using Firebug in it’s 0.3 days, it has completely changed my approach (and attitude) to front-end design and programming work in HTML, CSS and JavaScript. As a Firefox extension, it’s immense functionality and beautiful simplicity continue to amaze me. As Joe points out, there are tens or hundreds of thousands people still using the previous stable 0.4.1 release, which was downloaded 840,000 times from the official Firefox Add-ons site alone! They are going to get a very nice surprise when the automatic update comes through. […]

I can’t seem to post to Google Groups and see my post, so I’m posting this here. There’s a bug in the Firebug Style Panel. Open this data url and inspect it:
data:text/html;charset=utf-8,%3Cstyle%3Etd%5Bid%5E%3D%22tDataText%22%5D%2Ctd%5Bid%5E%3D%22tDataText%22%5D%20%3E%20div%5Bid%5E%3D%22div_snippet%22%5D%20%7Bmargin%3A%200%203px%20!important%3B%7D%3C%2Fstyle%3E%3Ctable%3E%3Ctr%3E%3Ctd%20id%3D%22tDataText0%22%3Etext%3C%2Ftd%3E%3C%2Ftr%3E%3C%2Ftable%3E
Inspect the word “text” and look at the Style panel, it will show some mangled up HTML/CSS code:
div[id^=”div_snippet”]/1″ class=”cssRule insertInto “>
td[id^=”tDataText”], td[id^=”tDataText”] > div[id^=”div_snippet”] {
margin:0pt 3px !important;
}
I also get this error in the Firefox Error Console:
Error: node has no properties
Source file: chrome://firebug/content/domplate.js
Line: 452
Hope this helps. Thank you for making Firebug, it’s an awesome tool.

Is Firebug 1.0 incompatible with Minefield (Gran Paradiso), as FireBug 0.4 is? getfirebug.com doesn’t say.
Also, I just ran Tools > Add-ons > Find Updates in Minefield and it didn’t find updates to FireBug 0.4. Maybe the capitalized ‘B’ throws it off

hi Joe and fanboys/girls. as with many versions of firebug since the first one i ever tried (0.2 or something?) this version is broken. here are the exact bugs:
firefox 2.0.0.1 / firebug 1.0__
upon pressing F12 the window never actually shows up, even when you choose open in new window. in the error console, theres this:
1:
Error: jsdIScript has no properties
Source File: file:///root/.mozilla/firefox/wz1zwii3.default/extensions/firebug@software.joehewitt.com/components/firebug-service.js
Line: 80
2:

Source File: file:///usr/lib64/mozilla-firefox/components/nsUrlClassifierLib.js
Line: 3240
3:
Error: Cc[’@mozilla.org/security/streamcipher;1′] has no properties
Source File: file:///usr/lib64/mozilla-firefox/components/nsUrlClassifierLib.js
Line: 3240
4:
Error: uncaught exception: [Exception… “ServiceManager::GetService returned failure code:” nsresult: “0×80570016 (NS_ERROR_XPC_GS_RETURNED_FAILURE)” location: “JS frame :: chrome://browser/content/safebrowsing/sb-loader.js :: anonymous :: line 76″ data: no]
firefox 3.0pre2 Gecko 1.9pre2 CVS checkout build:
pressing f12, firebug does load. howeer, it breaks AJAX on every site, with errors like this:
Error: uncaught exception: [Exception… “Component returned failure code: 0×80004005 (NS_ERROR_FAILURE) [nsIXMLHttpRequest.setRequestHeader]” nsresult: “0×80004005 (NS_ERROR_FAILURE)” location: “JS frame :: http://m/s/j.js :: anonymous :: line 11″ data: no]
if anyone can fix these bugs so that i can use firebug, i’d be happy to donate, since i’ll likely end up using it - but i can’t donate in advance, since it’s been broken for so long and nobody seems interested in fixing it and/or firefox for linux
plus i’m fairly broke..

Absolutely indispensable tool. When I was using the pre-1.0 versions, it was a neat tool that I used sometimes. 1.0 has evolved FireBug far beyond where I ever even hoped it would go. I have enjoyed watching this evolve into the amazing product it is now, and I look forward to whatever feature surprises lie ahead.

The only way to get real web development work done anymore. Been using FB since it was just a baby bug and never had an install of FF without it! It is one of the first extensions installed in a new FF install. It is the must have extension.
It is great to see it has made it to a final 1.0 release and maybe for those that never caught the bug, they will now. It is amazing with each new release how the capabilities and usability just grow and get better / not bloated.

Because it makes my job at least twice as easy as it was before. I won’t bore you with details; I’ll just say that even alongside other helpful tools such as the Web Developer plug-in, it’s infinitely useful if you’re putting pages together, whether you’re an amateur, a professional, or someone who fools himself into thinking he’s both. The drill is basically as follows: Hit F12. Press ‘Inspect’. Hover over any element on your page and click on it to see what css values that element is using (or not using). You can even change values ‘on the fly’ and the page will update in front of your very eyes (locally at least). It’s the perfect bug-fixing tool. I’m now going to go do a little bit of fixing elsewhere. Previously, I wouldn’t have been arsed to bother with it had Firebug not made re-understanding previously forgotten old tag soup so easy. Firebug is an amazing tool! It has changed my life as a Javascript and Ajax developer. I can’t thank you enough.
I have just one tiny quibble: in the debugger, the arrow icons for Step Over and Step Into seem, according to my intuitions, to be switched around. That is, the downward arrow looks like it should be Step Into, while the rightward arrow ought to be Step Over - parallel to the leftward error, Step Out. I keep hitting the wrong button by mistake because they don’t agree with my intuitions. Any chance of switching these around in the next release (if you agree with me, that is)?

Congratulations on such a great tool. Helped me alot.
I had a minor, yet… pretty hard to find error, and because of this error my site was loading in aprox 30 seconds, i was really anoyed bout it… with Firebug, found the error and fixed it in 2 minutes, now my site loads in max 5 seconds.
The only thing i am sorry for is that i didn’t know bout firebug earlier.
Thank you so much.
