Firebug 1.0 News
Thanks to the 130+ people who commented thoughtfully on [my previous blog][] about Firebug. I’m so excited about getting Firebug 1.0 out to you guys, and I’ve been working my tail off to get the beta in shape for a wider release. Today I have three big announcements to make.
### Open Source
The first announcement is in regards to Firebug’s licensing. As I was developing Firebug 1.0, I began to wonder if I should try to turn the project from a hobby into a business. When I proposed this idea on my blog, the response was very positive and reaffirmed my belief that Firebug could do well as a commercial product.
However, in the end, I just don’t feel like that is the right thing to do. I love working on Firebug because I know I’m making a lot of people happy and helping to advance the state of the art. That’s a lot more meaningful to me than just about anything else, and so, I’ve decided that **Firebug will remain free and open source**. Like previous versions, 1.0 will be released under the same MPL/GPL/LGPL tri-license employed by Firefox.
Consequently, I would like to ask for your help rather than requiring it. If Firebug is valuable to you, and you can afford to, please [donate][] to support the project. If Firebug helps your company build better products faster, please ask your manager if the company could [donate][].
I hope we can raise enough to create a job for someone who loves building web development tools as much as I do. If not, then I would at least like to use the donations to hire an intern to help out for a while.I don’t know how much I can expect the open source community to contribute actual code to Firebug. For every open source success story there are dozens more projects like Venkman and DOM Inspector which get neglected for years. Success seems predicated on having solid leadership, and while I have put a huge amount of time into Firebug, I will have limited time for this role in the future (see [Parakey][]). The best way to keep Firebug strong would be to have at least one person working on it every day.
### Public Beta
Here’s the news you’ve been waiting for. Today I am opening up the Firebug 1.0 beta to the public. A few dozen people have been testing Firebug for the last few weeks, and they have been enormously helpful in raising the quality of the builds. Bear in mind, this is still a “beta” in the old-fashioned sense, not the Web 2.0 “infinite beta” sense. The quality of the beta is good, but it is not perfect, so I would be grateful if you could [report bugs][] as you find them. I hope to have the final Firebug 1.0 done by the end of December.

### Support for IE, Opera, and Safari
Finally, I have a new solution for people who have wanted to use Firebug’s console logging features when testing on Internet Explorer, Opera, and Safari. Today I am also releasing the first public beta of [Firebug Lite][], a cross-browser JavaScript library you can use to embed a simplified Firebug console in your web pages.
With Firebug Lite, now you can freely call console.log() and its brethren for debugging in all browsers.

Joe, thank you so much for keeping this essential tool free. I truly believe your decision will have a lot of impact on the evolution of web. I find FireBug indispensible and will try to donate both on my own and within a few month will try convince my manager to have the company donate, too. I would like to call on everybody else to help and donate as well.

It’s been a while since I spoke up - I just thought I should let you know that I appreciate your decision to keep Firebug open source.
It seems you’re wondering whether there will be sufficient interest from other hackers to work on Firebug, etc. Personally, I think it would help a lot of people if you had a public read-only source repository (on which only you yourself/the-individual-who-works-on-it-day-and-night have commit access) so as to facilitate developing against something. Right now, for example, if I would want to do more work on Firebug, I would have to develop against the release version or the public beta, neither of which, or so I assume, is up to date with whatever you have on your machine
. I’m pretty sure writing a patch against the current release version would be useless, for example.

The beta just rocks. It’s going to save us years of development. I think we can even time-travel or something. I’m starting to suspect that Firebug will end up being a full editor!!
Me and the company I work for donated some money. It would be great if you could update on the state of the donations; not necesarily exact cuantities but some tip to see if the donations get to something meaninful.

Personally I am against Paypal too, but I tried it and actually succeeded (luckily). I’m guessing I succeeded because I have different cards now (the one’s Paypal doesn’t know about). Otherwise I’d probably still be blocked for simply canceling my account.
It would be nice to have a more customer-friendly alternative to Paypal.

Firebug is one of the most essential webdev tools. Each new version is a substantial improvement over the last. I was giddy as I clicked around this latest update and saw some of the new features. My wife asked what I was “giggling at”. Astounding! I can’t say ‘thank you’ enough - so I’ll donate.

As far as the donation is concerned, you will certainly receive a generous one from my side. I am sure Firebug will save me heaps of time and since that time earns me money, you shall get a fair cut.
May I suggest that since you have a certain amount in mind (for that hopefully-employee-to-be) you should suggest an amount to donate?
On a very personal note: This is one of the rare occasions that wouldn’t let me lose the last shreds of hope in mankind. It may sound pathetic because, after all, it is just a piece of code. But one can clearly see that this isn’t just another project but also a matter that’s near to one’s heart. Thank you.

The “Net” tab seems very interesting. But when visiting a site like slashdot.org, that references a lot of external javascript files, it seems only one javascript file can be loaded at a time (not even images can be loaded concurrently). Is this a bug in Firebug or is this a bug in Firefox itself? I would understand if only one javascript file could be executed at a time, but others ought to be loaded in the meantime.

The tool that was invaluable to web developers has just got even better.
After installing the beta, I kept thinking “Holy S***” that’s cool for every new feature I discovered. It’s not style without substance though, Firebug seriously increases my productivity in Javascript development work.

The old firebug changed the way I fixed my code. But now, WTF? Too much goodness for one extension! Debugging css in REAL-TIME? WTF! Box model tweaks in real-time? WTF! The NET tab? WTF!?! Detachable window!!! WTFF?! I can add css declarations in realtime? And edit the HTML???? WTFFFFFF!? Amazing!

REALLY COOL!!
I have one feature request: could you show the object class names in the inspector? (this can be read with .constructor.name)
I had some difficulties to find the stack trace and script file names. I liked the previous selectboxes of 0.4 a lot. On the other hand, the options and tabs are really improved usability-wise

In the profiler, is there any chance you could add an “own average time” tab? “own time” is far more useful than time for optimization, but avg. time is based on time, now own time.

I cant donate even if I liked to. All the money transaction accounts require credit card and thats like ancient approach. I wont be getting them before they start accepting direct bank account transactions and user validation witout credit card. That goes to all webshops etc.
